DURANGO, Colo. — The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has introduced a new early evening steam excursion, the Highline Express, which made its first trip on July 1.
Running on Mondays and Tuesdays this month, the 3½-hour trip is the railroad’s shortest summer excursion and its only evening train, departing Durango at 4:30 p.m. and returning by 8:10 p.m. The trip includes the Highline, the segment of the D&S track running some 400 feet above the Animas River, and Horseshoe Curve. The trip will also include a brief stop at Rockwood Station, where passengers can stretch their legs and experience the evening quiet. The train will offer beverages, snacks, and light meal options.
The train “is a direct response to the increasing demand for more flexible travel experiences,” railroad general manager Jeff Johnson said. “This evening excursion offers a condensed but immersive experience of the Animas Valley and iconic canyon views along the highline, allowing even the busiest travelers to appreciate the beauty and history of our region.”
